About the Event

The ACM-W India Grad Cohort for Indian women in research is a flagship mentoring initiative designed to support, inspire, and empower women graduate students in computing and related disciplines across India. The 2025 edition of the event will be hosted at IIT Kanpur, bringing together aspiring researchers, accomplished academics, and leading industry professionals in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
CRA-WP has been hosting the Grad Cohort event in the USA, dedicated to supporting women in computing through their graduate studies and beyond. Inspired by this vision, ACM-W India launched its own Grad Cohort initiative in 2018, tailored to the Indian context.
Since then, the event has been held annually, with the aim of empowering Indian women graduate students in computing by fostering meaningful interactions with accomplished women researchers from both academia and industry. The primary aim of the Grad Cohort is to encourage and sustain the participation of women in research careers in computing by providing guidance, mentorship, and a strong support network. Through keynote talks, mentoring sessions, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, the event seeks to:
- Offer mentorship and career guidance to women pursuing Master’s and Ph.D. programs in computing.
- Help participants navigate the challenges of a research career, including publishing, networking, and work-life balance.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and motivating environment where women researchers can connect with peers and role models.
- Promote collaboration and long-term engagement among women in computing research across academic and industry landscapes.

About the Host Institute
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) is one of the premier institutions in the country located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1959, it started its journey from the premises of HBTU, Kanpur initially and moved to its current campus of approximately 1000 acres (Grand Trunk Road) in 1963. During the first ten years of its existence, a consortium of nine US universities helped set up IIT Kanpur’s research laboratories and academic programmes under the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP).
IITK is committed to cutting-edge research in science and engineering as evident from a large number of publications and patents. IIT Kanpur is one of the first institutions in the country to own a computer (IBM 1620). IIT Kanpur is ranked 5th in overall 2024 NIRF rankings. “As of January 2025, at least 17 Padma Shri, 4 Padma Bhushan, 1 Padma Vibhushan, and 33 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize recipients have been affiliated with IIT Kanpur as alumni or faculty members” – Wikipedia.
