Title of the talk:

An Integrated Approach to Computing Education

Abstract :

The desire to make computing education universally available to students runs headlong into many difficulties: the lack of teachers, funds, time, space, and so on. Many implementation strategies also make the fundamental mistake of assuming that the only, or even best, way to teach computing is through computing courses. There is an alternative that addresses all these problems, which is to integrate computing into courses already taught in schools: mathematics, physics, history, geography, and so on. Doing so is not merely pragmatic, it also gets closer to the heart of why computing matters. Our Bootstrap project is a leader in integrated computing education, and has successfully implemented this approach for over a decade. This talk will explain some of our principles and our approach, as well as the challenges that integration faces.
