ACMI-W Annual Summit

Hemangee K. Kapoor is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India. She received her B.Eng. degree in Computer Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune, India, the M.Tech. degree in CSE from IIT Bombay, and the Ph.D. degree in CSE from London South Bank University, U.K. Her research spans in the broad area of computer architecture and specifically in multicore caches, emerging non-volatile memory technologies, network-on-chip and design of accelerators for neural networks. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE and ACM.

She has published her work in reputed journals and conferences and has a few best paper awards. She is Associate Editor of Journal of Systems Architecture and IEEE Design and Test. Prof. Kapoor has actively participated in the ACM India council: as a member (2014-22) and as Vice President (2020-22). She serves as a member of the ACM international council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ACM-DEI) (2021-25).

Talk Title: Longevity:​ In Emerging NVMs and Career​

Talk Abstract:

Increased transistor density and processing capacity need high density memories. Given that conventional SRAM/DRAM are not scalable, emerging non-volatile memory (NVMs) are thought to be potential substitutes. NVMs can provide high density with low leakage power. However, low write durability, high write latency, and high write energy hinder their adoption as complete replacements for SRAM/DRAM. In this talk, we will see techniques to improve NVM longevity. Further in the talk, we will discuss roles in an academic career and how to handle the challenges.

Arati M. Dixit received a Ph.D. in Computer Engg.(with a minor in Mathematics) from Wayne State University(WSU), Detroit, MI, USA. She has completed The Certificate in Scientific Computing Program from WSU. She is an Alumni of IIT Bombay & University of Pune with Computer Science & Engg. M.Tech and BE respectively.

Her Professional experience involves a role as a Senior Scientist, Applied Research Associates Inc. Raleigh USA, and a Teaching Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, North Carolina State University. She has been associated with Defence Institute of Advanced Technology and Savitribai Phule Pune University. She has been a member of Board of Studies and Research Recommendation Committees with reputed Institutes/Universities. Her areas of interest are AI and Security Analytics, Cybersecurity, Cyberphysical systems and Education Technology.

She is ACM Senior member and Chairperson, Regional Activities Committee, ACMI-W (ACM Council on Women in Computing) Global Leadership Team, supporting and advocating full engagement of women in computing. She was Chairperson of AACMI-W, India(2017-19). She has been instrumental in proposing and coordinating 3-week residential ACM India summer school for women on ‘Information Security and Forensics’. She has been active volunteer and founding Vice-Chairperson of ACM iSIGCSE (India SIGCSE) and Chairperson, ACM Pune Professional Chapter. She has been in the ACM India Eminent Speaker Program (ESP), with more than 50 talks delivered. She has received many prestigious awards like the 2019 Outstanding Contribution to ACM Award for contributing to the growth and diversity of ACM programs in India, especially ACMI-W India.

Title: Technological Innovations for National Security

Talk Abstract:

In this current era of influential and consequential disruptions, the race of establishing supremacy in the present and future battlefield demands nations to be proactive in research and development of emerging technology. These areas of focus for research and development strategies are dynamic and shifting swiftly! Critical emerging technologies for national security will be discussed, highlighting promising emerging startups that are disrupting legacy systems and steering in a new commercial and military applications future.

The status of the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) convoy can be evaluated with the help of UGV reliability. The UGV reliability is predicted using a graph theoretic approach, supported by Fuzzy and Neuro-Fuzzy techniques for the node, link and system reliability evaluation. This will be used as an exemplar for the discussion.

Kalika Bali is a Sr. Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Labs India, where she has dedicated nearly two decades to enhancing human-computer interactions through language technologies. Her focus lies in creating inclusive tech for a diverse range of languages and communities, especially those that are underrepresented. She is particularly interested in how Foundational Models like GPT can impact society, for better or worse. Her recent work navigates the crossroads of multilingual and multicultural AI. She was on the first (2023) TIME100 AI list for her continuing work on breaking down language barriers and fostering inclusivity in the AI sphere.

Shalini Kapoor is Chief Technologist for AWS APJ, Public Sector. She engages with key executive stakeholders at government agencies, public sector undertakings, education institutions, healthcare and non-profit organizations to shape policy, transform culture and implement change. She is a thought leader driving technology adoption for citizen scale national platforms leveraging Gen AI and Cloud thus positively impacting the lives of citizens through skilling, healthcare, livelihood and inclusion. She is a prolific speaker at tech conferences and a strategic advisor at several industry and policy bodies. Shalini has 27 years of industry experience, 15 patents, 4 IEEE papers, and was an IBM Fellow & Vice President prior to joining AWS. She is author of the book, ‘AI for You- The new game Changer’. She is passionate about women in STEM, tech enabled societal reforms and academia.

Preeti Mudliar is Assistant Professor at IIIT Bangalore, specializing in Human-Computer Interaction, Science and Technology Studies, and Communication Studies. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology and social justice using ethnographic and field immersion methods, particularly in the context of India’s biometric systems for food security. Her work has been published at ACM CHI, ACM CSCW, and journals such as Information, Communication & Society. Her design work with students for Samsung Research and Development Institute India, Bangalore, has contributed to features that were globally rolled out in Samsung phones. Preeti was named the inaugural ‘Women in Tech’ Fellow (2024), awarded by the Australian Consulate Bengaluru and the Australia India Institute, University of Melbourne. She is currently also serving as vice-chair of the ACM Asia SIGCHI subcommittee. 

Niyati currently leads AI and is a co-founder at Hyperbots Inc. She spent a decade at Adobe Research before starting up Hyperbots as a part of their research team focused on NLP and multimodal content understanding. She holds a PhD from the University of Maryland which was at the intersection of vision and language. In addition to her industry career, she has been teaching at IIIT Hyderabad and ISB as an adjunct faculty.

Jayashree Mohan is a senior researcher at Microsoft Research India where she builds systems infrastructure for efficient LLM inference. Her research interests are in storage systems and building systems for ML applications. Her work has been published at top systems conferences like SOSP, OSDI, FAST, MLSys, and VLDB. She holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, working on storage systems for emerging ML applications. Prior to that, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from NIT Surathkal.
